The Lorax and Easter's End
“The earth has music for those who listens”, is the famous quote by George Santayana, which is highly explored through the two stories “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and “Easter’s end” by Jared Diamond. The two stories articulate around one big theme, Nature. They explore how nature is taken for granted even so abused and destroyed by human beings and how the outcome affects all the living things that depend on it, including us people. Even though the stories have the same theme, the details about how it took place, how it affects the environment and the surrounding, also if it has a solution or not are relatively different.
The Lorax is a story about the Once-ler, a guy who found natural resources/trees which were home to different kind of animals including fishes, squirrels and birds and how he uses that natural resource only and only for his use without thinking twice and how it affects the animals in which apparently lost their home, food and everything to live by, While Easter’s end is a story which is true and took place. Easter end is about Easter Island which long time ago was almost taken for paradise for its natural resources but is destroyed by people somehow.
The Lorax and Easter’s End has great but different specifics about how the stories took place. The two stories have completely different characters who are antagonists. The antagonist of The Lorax is a single person who is blinded by money to see what he’s doing, which is cutting trees, and not able to see the effect on creatures until it affects him, on the other hand Easter’s end antagonists are researchers which also recruited Polynesians, people of Easter island, to help with their project of moving the big stone statues using lots and lots of trees which cause the extinct natural resources of Easter island like trees, animals and including the people who used to live there, the same people who are at fault of that happening Polynesians, can’t find food, shelter or something to use for their needs after the trees were gone so they barely survived. As for symbolism Easter’s end doesn’t have one because it’s a true story and it did happen however The Lorax do have symbolism of characters for instance The Lorax represents one of those few people who thinks they should protect nature or one of those organizations which care for the environment, The ONCE-ler represents people who doesn’t care for nature.
With these differences, the two stories have also lot of things that are similar. Both stories have the matching them, nature, misuse of nature. They both tell how people misuse nature only for their own use without thinking further about thinking and the follow up consequence of their actions. We are also able to notice that in both stories the positive and good thinking people are ignored and overshadowed by the many people who are doing the opposite. It tells us that if we don’t start working together and outshine the wrong doing people there’s no guarantee that the stories won’t happen again and it’ll be horrible.
Over all the stories have great messages for one who will notice it and put it to action. They tell people what is happening right now in the world we live in and if we don’t try to stop it before it’s completely done, there won’t any happy ending to any living thing.
