Yellow iris also known as Yellow flag or by it’s scientific
name IRIS PSEUDACORUS is a non- native plant in the united states and is spreading
throughout the country. It is originated in Britain, Europe but was transported
by Gardeners from Newfoundland to Minnesota. It was first found in California but
with it’s really rapidly spreading behavior it’s anywhere in the world. Their spreading
factors are limitless, Humans for one are the one who started it and also wind
can be a means for the seed to disperse to different places, since it grows
near water, water can also be counted. The seeds are very rapidly adaptable and
spreading so it grows very fast. The yellow iris spread in north America by washing
downstream in floods. It occurs in
almost every state, with the exceptions of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa,
Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona.
The reason why this invasive species is considered a threat is because it compares with native shoreland vegetation meaning it can form dense stands with very thick mats of rhizomes and dead leaves that can displace native plants and change wetlands from a wet to a drier environment. It reduces habitat for wild life and is listed as an illegal weed and is really poisonous to both plants and animals. The specie can be controlled by mechanical method using diffing to eliminate vegetative spereading or using chemical spreaying with glyphosate or Rodeo for aquatic areas.
Since the plant has a great resistance, it an tolerate long periods of anoxia (low soil oxygen). I. pseudacorus grows well in soils with high acidity with a pH range of 3.6 to 7.7. It has a high nitrogen requirement so it’s going to be hard to get rid of it. Even if we use the chemical way we can harm other plants so it might be non-beneficial some times. So the more the specie the less plant are able to grow properly and the more money we spend on trying to get rid of it. But still we should try our best to find a way to make it beneficial to us and to the ecosystem.
