Biology Essentials- Natural Selection Guided
Viewing
1: Who was Charles Darwin? What is he famous for?
The first scientist to explain what and how ecosystem is and works respectively
2: What is evolution?
Any change to a gene pool
3: What is the gene pool? What are alleles?
Gene pool is combination of all genes in population, alleles are different types of genes
3: What is natural selection? What does it mean to have high “fitness”?
Natural selection is when you live or die based on your appearance. Fitness means the ability to survive and pass genes on.
4: How do we get new characteristics in organisms?
Mutation is the way to get new characteristics in organisms
5: How else do we get genetic variability (variety) in organisms?
Reproduction is the variable to get new organisms
6: Explain the story of the Peppered Moth. How is this an example of natural selection?
The moth has two species, light and dark. Before coal dust built off up on trees light moth had a higher fitness because they weren't preyed on highly because of the advantage of their color. But after the coal dust the atmosphere got darker then the dark moth had the higher fitness because the light ones were more prayed on.
7: What is the equation for Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium?
p^2+2PQ+Q^2=1
8: What are adaptations?
Process that organisms are selected for
9: What is the best definition of natural selection? (explain)
The best definition of natural selection is differential reproductive which means we are made differently and have high fitness.
